Forum recap: Our World of Philanthropy

Posted By WINGS, Wednesday, October 24, 2012

Resource Alliance held a forum on the world of philanthropy—present and future, in Holland on the afternoon of Monday 15 October and morning of Tuesday 16 October.

The forum brought together more than 60 participants—representatives from trusts and foundations, heads and directors of CSR, high net worth individuals, private wealth advisors, support organisations serving philanthropy, senior fundraisers and representatives from bilateral and multilateral agencies—a diverse group of actors who have a role to play in shaping the future of global philanthropy. Several WINGS members attended the event.

Together they explored questions affecting philanthropy as we analyse the present and start looking to the future:

  • Are we working towards a shared agenda? How have the MDGs influenced our thinking and actions? Do we need another set of goals post-2015? Who is actually setting the development agenda?
  • Are impact investing, market-based solutions and social entrepreneurship the answer for alleviating poverty? Where then does that leave more traditional forms of philanthropy?
  • Are we being bold and innovative enough? How can we collaborate better and learn from each other to manage risk and improve impact?
  • Are we willing to foster local philanthropy to reduce dependency on aid?
  • What might an ideal model for sustainable philanthropy look like in the future?
Neelam Makhijani, Resource Alliance CEO, introduced the forum in September. Watch below.
